» CHAPTER TWENTY ONE «

Joe was a little confused . Why was she hesitating ? He thought it would be an EASY answer .
"Uh , well Joe ..." she rambled . "I`m not sure if I can make that promise ..."
Joe`s heart dropped a little . "What do you mean ... you`re not sure ?" he asked suspiciously .
"All I mean is I don`t think I can make that kind of promise to you , that`s all . Nothing personal ." Alex explained . Joe was still confused .
"Why not ?" he asked again .
"I JUST CAN`T , JOE ." She raised her voice a little louder , but not to yelling yet . Joe just didn`t say anything and walked out of the room .

Where he was going , he wasn`t sure . It was getting pretty close to 10:00 PM , but he wanted to take a drive to nowhere . He was heading towards the front door when his mom stopped him .
"Where are you going ?" she asked , sitting in the living room , watching FOX news at 10 .
"Out ." he said bluntly .
"Without a shirt and pants ?" she wondered , raising her eyebrows . Joe looked down . He had completely forgotten he was nearly naked .
"Oh ." he said , a little embarrassed , even if it WAS his mom . "I`ll go put on a jacket ."
He ran upstairs to his room , which was in a mess because he was moving everything out to downstairs . He searched through all of his drawers , but didn`t find anything interesting , not that anyone would see what he was wearing since it was pitch black outside . He gave up and went to Kevin`s temporary room , since Kevin was about to go back to California in 2 days to go back to school . He found a large gray Adidas hoodie and blue silk gym shorts and threw them on . He grabbed his iPhone , ran back downstairs and stormed out the front door just fast enough so his mom couldn`t comment him anymore . He hopped into the family Escalade and drove off to who-knows-where .

About ten minutes later , he arrived at Orwell Park , his city`s public park , but he didn`t come out of his car . He just sat in the front seat listening to the car stereo , thinking a little -- or a lot ...
Ok , lemme get this straight ; Alex goes off getting pregnant by a 21 year old douchebag , contracts HIV , get humiliated by the ENTIRE school -- TWICE , and STILL doesn`t think she should renew her virginity ? What`s WRONG with this girl ? She`s NOT the sweet 15 year old that left Georgia a year ago. He thought to himself . Just then , his phone rang . He looked at the screen to see Alex`s name appear .
"Oh , gosh , what does she want now ?!" he said to himself . He didn`t bother to answer the phone and hit "decline" .
About 2 minutes later , his phone rang again , but it was a different noise -- it was a text message alert ; and it was Alex again .
"Ughhh !" Joe groaned . He was starting to bug her , but he decided to read it anyway . He opened the text .
Since i realized u probably didn`t wanna talk 2 me , i wanted 2 txt u . i didn`t think u would take the whole conversation about me not renewing my virginity until i wuz married literally , but u obv. don`t understand . i just don`t wanna , and i can`t c y u don`t get it , but whatev . i can make my own decisions and i don`t need u 2 control my life and make choices 4 me . besidez , it can`t get n e worse than me getting pregnant and having hiv , so who cares what i do now anyway ?

Joe couldn`t believe what he just read . Did he REALLY just get "told off" by the girl he cares about -- or thought he cared about ? He just threw down his phone on the passenger`s seat . He yawned and rubbed his face leisurely . He just wanted to go back home and go to sleep . He looked at the clock ; 10:57 PM . He backed out of Orwell Park and make a u-turn back to home .

About two minutes later , he found himself nearly falling asleep driving , struggling to stay awake . He came to a stop light and waited for the light to turn green for him to cut straight across the road . The light turned green , and he slowly approached the other side of the road . As if on cue , coming at 80 miles and hour on a 35 mile an hour road , a red Mercedes Benz , driving on the wrong side of the road , hurled into Joe`s black Escalade -- head first .
