| today is my long day, and i'm thinking about skipping out of work a bit early. i have to be in class at 5:30, but i guess it's really going to start raining soon so i should go let zeno in the house (he's been outside all day). plus then i can grab a little coffee. i've been playing this okami game like mad. it's freaking awesomely fun. i've put in 21 hours over the past three days (with breaks for sleep, kayaking, a couple of walks, and a wal-mart trip...i have to have food to munch on after all). it's a blast, easily the most fun game i've played on the wii yet. psych club event is cancelled tomorrow, thank god. oops, i hear it raining, i'm going to jet immediately. | | |
| school has officially started and i'm officially stressed. not too terribly, it's just that the weight of being president of psych club has me really worried that i'm going to suck the whole thing up.
today is our first meeting and i suppose i'm ready...

| my time here is drawing to a close, and it's quite daunting to think of how i will spend all the time by myself once i'm away from nathan for this next 4 months.
i have to go on base to get my mili. id reprinted today. atm i'm waiting for my hair to dry. i met these two girls yesterday who are staying at the hotel for the same reason as i am yesterday morning. this morning i talked with one of them for a long time, and i think we may all go out to dinner together. her name is serena and she's from panama. she and her husband and child just got back from being in korea for 3 years, and she's been telling me all about it. it sounds totally kick ass. it was really cool to meet some people in my same situation and life style. those two girls have been at it a lot longer than me and they were so sweet to me. they both really like the traveling...the other girl lisa was in hawaii for 6 years, and they insisted i would like it. it was strange because it was like we were instantly becoming really great friends. i've heard about this...people in the military making fast friends quickly because you know you only have so long at one place. i can live with that. serena seems like she stays at home with her daughter and lisa is just about to get her master's degree. they were both really cool.
i dunno...i've just been worried that i wouldn't be able to make friends with military people, so this was a good thing to meet such cool people who were really open and different. i guess i was still holding onto some stereotypes about stuff. (although i do know there's a lot of goofy military wives out there too)
anyway, i better get ready some more. i have to try and cover up this huge zit that won't come all the way up on my face so i can take a dumb picture. of course. | | |
| so things are going pretty well. i went into town day before last and walked around downtown and found a local history museum, spent a couple of hours there. today i'm going back to look around in a few antique stores i saw, hopefully i can find some thrift stores to look around in. today is cool b/c it's nathan's last day to work this week. he had to leave the hotel this morning at 4 am for a PT test and we're hoping he gets off early today. we're going to out a local pizza place tonight noted for having a great beer selection and maybe catching a movie. then the swamp and horseback riding this weekend (hopefully). i've actually become pretty used to just being completely lazy around here. i sleep in till 9:30-10, make my way downstairs for free breakfast, go back upstairs and exercise while i watch tv, and then either go out to the pool to tan and read/do crossword puzzles, or jump in the shower and get ready to go explore town up. i've really caught up on my montel and people's court. geocaching would be nice...but i can't seem to get my computer to want to d/l caches to the gps. argh. | | |
| the trip so far...here's an update on what i've been up to this past week, my faithful online voyeurs!
we headed out last tuesday morning and drove straight down through arkansas into louisiana and mississippi, then back DOWN into LA to hit up new orleans. we ran around town for a few hours, ate at a hole in the wall, and checked out a local pub thanks to our friend chris who lives there. he showed us around in a way that a local can, always nice. we stayed the night there (free!) lol and then headed out the next morning, aiming for florida.
we hand railed the coast all the way to Destin, FL and got out for a while to swim at the beach. it was nice, pretty crowded, and the city was a mess of tourists and near accidents, but the beaches were quite nice. we even found a private beach area for military personnel that kept us away from the crowds, but there were tons of jellyfish rolling in and we had to go find another spot. after some swimming and being silly, we continued on down a state highway (we tried to keep off interstates) into a couple of truly lovely coastal towns (notably, mexico beach and callaway). i wish that we would have spent our swimming time there...the beaches were still white sand, far less crowded, and the towns were residential areas (nicer atmosphere).
the panhandle area of florida was beautiful to drive through, it was just like a thick forest the whole way. we ended up staying the night in a town called cross city (dumpy hotel) and continued on the next day into st. petersburg (outside tampa).
st. petersburg was awesome. tourist-y, but very cosmopolitan. so tons of shopping etc. but very upscale. we stayed quite close to the water (a yacht club was directly across the street) in a nice hotel (go hampton inn). we ate at a tapas/ceviche bar...awesomely delicious. i've always wanted to try ceviche. oh, and we ate at a really authentic english pub for lunch that day, owned by english people....very good food and beer. we walked around st. petersburg and marveled at the trees and the fun stuff to look at. ate some gelato too. yum.
also, we went to the salvador dali museum there. FANTASTIC. i've never been a huge fan of dali, liking a few of his works, but seeing such a huge collection of his stuff and getting immersed in what he was going for and learning more about him, etc. made me appreciate his work so much more. i wasn't able to leave w/o getting this really cool shirt and coffee mug, nathan got a magnet to add to his magnet collection (lol). we were there for at least 2 hours.
the next day we went to busch gardens and we both got in free b/c of military disc. BEST AMUSEMENT PARK I'VE EVER BEEN TO!!!!!! TONS of awesome coasters, super clean and beautiful (lovely lush vegetation everywhere), really well done animal exhibits around every corner, the longest wait time for a ride was 30 min., and FREE BEER. i'm not joking. they had this hospitality house where they'll let you sample anheuser-busch beers (shock top is really good) and you can just keep going back. i swear i drank like, 6 cups. they had an actually nice restaurant to eat in that wasn't cheesed out. a downpour started at one point in the day but we just ran around in the rain anyway, super fun. we were there for at least 6-7 hours and never got bored, doing new stuff till the last second we were there. and they had cool performers there too, i forgot. we were watching a contortionist as we were walking out to leave the park. i'd love to go back.
after that it was pretty much just driving till we got to augusta. we stopped one more time in lake mary. we got into augusta yesterday and i haven't seen a lot here that looks super fun. there's a swamp i really want to go check out and a big graveyard that's supposed to be really cool.
nathan is at work and i'm sitting at the hotel. i had planned on going on base to get a reprint of my mili. id so that i could shop a bit, exercise, get my hair trimmed, etc. but was told over the phone that i can't get an ID w/o nathan with me...i'm not sure how this is going to work out. so i'm kind of just hanging out cause i want nathan to hit the swamp with me. i could go check out broad st. (the riverwalk 'fun' area) but just don't feel like it. i may just make this a day of internet, tv, video games, and reading...i guess there's nothing wrong with having a day of down time. there's a pool here so i can go lay out if i want to, too.
anyhow, that's the news. hope everyone's doing great at home!
