Why I love my job entry #11

Today I was working on an art project with one of the boys in my class, and he was laughing uncontrollably. I couldn't figure out why in the heck he was cracking himself but I kind of just attributed it to his disability (autistic kids have laughter fits occasionally. It's kinda funny but kinda ridiculous, especially when you're trying to make them work). Well anyway about a minute or two passed until he farted and that's when he TOTALLY lost it. This is my second year teaching him and I've never seen him laugh that hard unprovoked. So I asked him, "Is that why you're laughing so hard? Cuz you're gassy?" He was laughing too hard; he couldn't answer.

I guess it's a boy thing.

Why I love my job entry #10

Today is Friday and every Friday is movie day! It's great. Today's movie of choice was Lion King, which is probably hands down the kids' favorite movies (aside from Pocahontas, which one of the kids loves because he is love with Pocahontas...no joke. I'm told that when he was little the only book he'd read was Pocahontas, and he'd always turn to the same page and just stare at her).

Well it was super cute because there is one boy in my new class who is the only kid who can talk. Most of the time it gets on our nerves ("I wanna go home." "Where's Mommy?" "Where's Daddy?") but this time it was hilarious cuz he was getting hella anxious and screaming in fear while the hyenas were plotting and then we got to the part when Mufasa dies and Scar blames it on Simba. He started getting all sad, and he was like "Daddddyyyyy...It's all my fault, it's all my fault." We were like "No...it's not your fault." But he couldn't be convinced otherwise. So we had to turn off the movie and tell him it was time to go home. hahahaha

Oh man this is going to be a fun year.

Why I love my Job, entry #9

...it's like a free workout.

So yesterday one of the kids wanted to go on the bars and he was asking me SO nicely (seriously...eye contact and everything, which is big for a kid with autistm and who at the end of the summer was a risk for self-injurious behaviors) so I took him across the bars. And so that means, basically he was sitting on my shoulder and I walked him across as he reached for the bars. He wanted to do it over and over again, and I wasn't smart enough to switch arms. Ai yah...it hurts everywhere.

But I think that is also compounded by the fact that I am also the one who is ALWAYS stuck pushing this one 80- or 90-lb kid UPHILL every day. OMFREAK peoples...80 or 90 lbs doesn't sound like tha much but take into account that the kid basically doesn't have control of his body, which basically means its like 80 or 90 lbs of dead weight. Also, the wheelchair probalby adds like another 10 lbs or so. OMGGGGGGG I hurt everywhere. But at least I'm buffer.

It's been about an eon...

Don't worry, I'm still alive. There just hasn't been too many things of interest happening in my life.

Summer school is over. I had 4 new preschoolers come in--super cute. One had pica, so she would eat everything: her hair, rocks, grass, bugs. Had to watch her like a hawk. Another one had about 4-5 seizures a day. A lot of people ask me what to do when someone has a seizure. We just hold her up to make sure she doesn't fall over and wait it out. It usually doesn't last too long and she's back to normal soon.

But now that the new school year has come I've been transferred to a different class. I'm scared but excited at the same time. I've been warned by just about everyone that there is one kid in the class that can smell fear like a freaking bear (analogy mine). And if he finds out how afraid you are, he'll target you and you won't be able to work with him for a while. GUHHH RATE. And he is most definitely stronger and probably bigger than me as well. Also this class has a lot more severely disabled kids. I was fortunate last year to have pretty much a whole class full of kids that didn't LOOK disabled and that were abnormally cute for kids their age anyway. So this year will definitely be a test for me...do I really love these kids or did I just love them cuz they were cute? BUT on the plus side, I can already tell that I'm going to learn a ton from this teacher. She has a few more years of experience under her belt and so she's already been teaching me a lot about how she runs the class and stuff.

So three cheers to the start of a new school year and the last year of my credential program (at least the first level). YAY!

Why I love my job entry #8

Today summer school started. Little did I know that summer school actually started on Friday. The district didn't tell us til Monday that we had to go in for a meeting on Friday. So I missed a day of work because I flew home for the week last week...oh well, I'm over it now.

Then today, I woke up for work at the usual time and realized "Wait, I don't know where to go." Summer school is always at a different school site than I usually work at but no one ever told me where to go! I also didn't know which classroom I was supposed to go to. And they also didn't tell me what time I was supposed to go in so I was late! *sigh*

BUT...the day went well and I must say the kids are super cute. The ones that were in my class last year grew soo much over the past few weeks. And the new little ones from preschool are SOOOOO CUTE. Seriously. One has pica, which means she eats everything (hair, rocks, mushrooms from the grass, etc). But she's the cutest thing ever and I spent recess playing tag with her haha and I think she loves me a little because by the end of the day she was trying to crawl into my lap to give me hugs

Man...if teaching preschool didn't involve so much work with families, I'd switch programs in a heart beat.
