Our first hotel was the Prodomo, a nice little set-up for all of us to ease into jet lag.
Almost looks like Tawni, but sadly, it's not. I found out that morning she wasn't coming after all. DANG.
But life goes on...
...and it went on to the Cologne Cathedral. We actually got to sing in this building. For an audience! I've got three words for you (two if you count the hyphenated word as one, and you should): SEVEN-SECOND ECHO.
These guys are either pretty amazing or pretty crazy. Probably both. The really look like statues. Then when you drop some change at their feet, they make an obligatory movement. Some bow, others wink, and some just change positions. It's a living I guess.

Chronicles of Germany: Chapter 2
Cheers!
...So, good story, we rested on the Rhine, my old roomie Brooksie pig-tail braided my hair, and then we sat down to eat the first of many German meals that would be really tasty, but none of which would include any alcohol. That's right, we were in Germany, GERMANY, and we were forbidden one drop. Seems terribly ironic, but I'm actually grateful for Friends' Community Life Standards. I mean, when you take a big group of performers overseas, and you're supposed to be representing a Chistian school, better to be safe than sorry where alcohol is involved, I say. Besides, we were perfectly fine keeping ourselves hydrated with Evian, which they served us in liter-sized glass bottles. That was pretty neat.

There's my roomie Lauren and my flight buddy Abby and the man in the blue is Kenneth, our esteemed sneezer and the one for whom I will have to find gifts this week. I'm afraid I only know the building as one on the way from our first dinner to our first hotel stay.

Chronicles of Germany: Chapter 1
The Restful Rhine

From the airport, we rode our two busses along the Rhine river to Rudesheim, a little town surrounded by vineyards. We shopped. (you'll see that phrase a few times throughout these chronicles. More than I'd probably like.) The scenery was beautiful, but I was a little too out of it from the seven-hour time change to appreciate much of the history of the numerous castles we passed. I was just grateful to rest in the beauty.
A shop in Rudesheim (and a somewhat dashing fellow of which they seem to have an abundance in Germany. Not that I was really paying attention or anything.)
A lovely, lovely fountain hosting lovely, lovely friends, one of whom is my official tour buddy and another of whom will end up to be my secret tour buddy. Mikayah and I roomed together for the duration of our time in Germany, and though I did not know it until the last tour day, Nathan Williams was my secret tour buddy. That means he bought me stuff (mostly chocolate) throughout the tour, delivering it through various messengers so as not to reveal their giver until he chose to do so. It would be a little romantic if it weren't quite so staged. Everybody had a secret pal. It's tradition. I bought mine a matching set of mugs, two sausage links, breath mints and two travel packs of tissues. (If you knew him, you'd understand the tissue thing. Just come to one of our Singing Quaker concerts and when you hear a mighty sneeze, mightier perhaps than you have ever heard before, look for him on the risers. It happens every time. Like clockwork.) Joe Mackey, the dark-haired boy, was the bearer of the multi-language dictionay to which we often referred, but from which we rarely profited. The point is, though, that we tried.
That was shopping...Now for resting:

Friends University Singing Quakers tour to Germany 2007

This is our posse of "deviants." Well half of it, anyway. From left to right, Abby Hutson, Ryan Peak, me (Erin Pohlenz is taking the photo). The four of us flew to Dallas to connect with international flight to Frankfurt, while the rest of the Singing Quakers went through Atlanta. Cheryl Heatherington, Lauren Pohlenz and Jan Peak (Ryan's mom) would meet us and the rest of the choir later in Frankfurt. Why "deviants," you ask? We worked with the tour agency to stay in Europe for a few days after our official choir tour was over so we could make the most of the traveling opportunities. That meant not only would we experience Germany, but a little of Austria as well, and we could spend the last few days abroad at our own pace. Now you should ask, "Why not deviate?" My point Exactly.
Here's the rest of the Singing Quakers in Atlanta on their way to connect to their cross-Atlantic flight. We're probably already in the air at this point., but I'm just guessing that.

"They have to come out of the same gate we did, right? We should just wait here for them, right?" Famous last words. Okay, so we deviants were a little late meeting up with the rest of the choir at the Frankfurt airport (that's "flughafen" in German), but we figured it out eventually. Sorry for the hold-up guys.

Ahh, sweet Frankfurt rendezvouz! Not so sweet jet lag. Thus begins our European journey. More to come!
