A morning radio host who was suspended for playing the Michigan fight song over and over has returned to work, and he let upset West Virginia University fans pelt him with eggs as penance.
Electric 102 morning show co-host Coach Kidd said he was sorry.
He said his enthusiasm got a little out of hand after Michigan, his alma mater, hired away WVU head football Coach Rich Rodriguez.
“I never meant to put any WVU fan down,” Kidd said on the air. “I took it a little too far.”
Sock Hop is a term coined in the 1950s in the United States, following the growth in popularity of rock and roll, to refer to informal sponsored dances at American high schools, typically held on the grounds of the high school itself in the gymnasium or cafeteria. Music was often recorded, sometimes live.
Initially the term referred to the practice of removing one's shoes in order to dance in stocking feet, typically to spare the floor from the scuff marks of dress shoes.
In subsequent decades, with the widespread popularity of sneakers and other types of shoes the practice of removing shoes was dropped and the term began to be applied more generally to any informal high school dance.
Record Hop refers to a hop at which disc jockeys played records. The number-one song of 1958 "At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors, describes the scene. Sock hops were often record hops and vice versa.
On the heels of great reviews and a huge media push, R.E.M.'s new album Accelerate debuts at #2 this week on the Soundscan sales chart. It is the veteran band's best chart debut since 1996's New Adventures In Hi-Fi. Accelerate moved over 115,000 copies in its first week and also debuts at #1 on the Alternative, Rock, Digital and Internet sales charts as well. The album also debuted at #1 around the world, topping the sales figures in Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the U.K., with #2 debuts in Austria, Germany, Holland and Italy.
However, R.E.M. could not overtake Country great George Strait in America, as his new album, Troubadour, debuted at #1. Rapper Trina debuted at #6 with Still Da Baddest, while Van Morrison made it into the top 10 with his new album, Keep It Simple. Other notable debuts for the week included the soundtrack to the Rolling Stones' new film, Shine A Light, at #11, Blues rockers The Black Keys at #14 with Attack & Release, veteran Rockers Sevendust at #19 with Chapter 7: Hope & Sorrow, and George Michael's new best-of set, Twenty-Five, debuting at #23
Move over Macarena, make way for Papaya! The new dance craze has simple steps—a little 'clap clap,' a little 'shuffle shuffle,' and 'point your fingers in the air!' And it's got everybody and their grandmother dancing along. It began as a gimmick on the T.V. show 'Are You Game,' where a correct answer may signal the whole audience to stand up and dance. Ricky Albot mans the fruit and vegetables section of Manila's SM Hypermarket. "It calls attention to us. And when we get a bit tired from work, the dance helps us relax." The dance is so contagious that the Hypermarket chain has made gyrating to the Papaya part of their staff's daily routine. [Josie Agtas, Shopper]: "It's fun, they're an added attraction to grocery shopping." Across the Philippines, the dance has inspired groovers in unlikely locations, including a church, an embassy, a jail, and at least one tourist resort.
