  • Tales from the Orient

So for Japanese homework nowadays we have to translate random passages from Japanese to English. They're quite entertaining in English:

I love Japanese cuisine. I especially like things like sukiyaki and yakitori. Japanese food in my country is not cheap so I have not had many chances to eat it. Now, since I can eat it everyday, I am very happy. There are a lot of unusual and rare foods in Japan. In my country, I never even heard of or seen umeboshi or nori. Since I have an interest in rare and unusual things, I try and eat any food that looks good.
One day, I went to eat dinner with my host family. There were a lot of vegetables and meat in the middle of the pot. I asked, “What kind of meat is this? Chicken?”     The father said, “Try it. It tastes good.”
“So, how is it? Does it taste good?”
“Yes, very. But what is it?” Everyone grinned and didn't say anything. I became slightly uneasy. However, since I was hungry and it tasted good, I ate a lot of it.
“Thank you for the meal, I ate well.”
“Amy-san, the truth is, this is a suppon (snapping turtle).”
        “A suppon?”
“A suppon is a type of turtle.”
“What?!...” I began to feel sick. The father said that suppon is good for your body, and is an expensive food.
That was a once in a lifetime experience. When I return to my home country, I can tell my friends, “I have eaten a turtle.” The turtle tasted good. But, after all, I don't want to eat any more turtles.
These are from a "Dear Abby"-type deal in a supposed Japanese newspaper. lol.
    1. Marriage and work
I am a 26 year old businesswoman. I have a boyfriend that is 3 years older. He was my senior in college, and we have been dating for 6 years. Recently he said, “I want to get married quickly.” Since he is nice and capable, I want to get married too. However, his company is in Tokyo and mine is in Osaka. He is saying he cannot quit his job. I don't want to quit my job either. Do you think it is better for me to quit my job and move to Tokyo? I love my boyfriend.

    2. I'm not getting better at Japanese
I am a Canadian exchange student. I am currently studying at a Japanese university. My worry is about the Japanese language. I am living with a Japanese host family now. My family is nice, but they have been speaking English to me. Therefore, I thought, “I should speak English,” and I use English. Although I have many Japanese friends at school, everyone speaks English better than I speak Japanese. Therefore, we usually use English. Even when I go shopping and say, “Excuse me. Um, please give me this,” in Japanese, the people at the shop reply in English, “Two hundred yen. Thank you!” I've already been in Japan for 6 months, but I haven't become good at Japanese at all. What should I do?

    3.I hate planes
I have hated planes since I was a child. Last year, my father suddenly became ill in Hokkaido so we got on a plane but I got really sick on it. The truth is, I have to go to Brazil three months later on a business trip. I have no choice but to take the 27 hour plane ride from Japan to Sao Paolo. However, I don't want to go. What should I do? Please give me advice.

  • You'd be so nice to come home to

    It's not that you're fairer
Than a lot of girls just as pleasin'
    That I doff my hat
As a worshipper at your shrine
    It's not that you're rarer
    Than asparagus out of season
No, my darling, this is the reason
Why you've got to be mine

You'd be so nice to come to
You'd be so nice by the fire
While the breeze on high, sang a lullaby
You'd be all that I could desire

Under stars chilled by the winter
Under an August moon burning above
    You'd be so nice
You'd be paradise, to come home to and love
